Vallée Du Rhone Blanc
White Wines from the Rhône Valley
Here you will find a curated selection of white wines from the Rhône Valley. From the steep slopes of the North to the sun-drenched terraces of the South, these nectars flourish thanks to noble grape varieties such as Clairette, Marsanne, Roussanne, and Grenache Blanc. Their unique style blends aromatic richness with balance, offering a flavour profile that ranges from floral notes to white-fleshed fruit. These dry and generous wines are perfect for both aperitifs and refined meals featuring fish or poultry.
The Rhône Terroirs
The Rhône Valley stretches from Lyon in the North to Arles in the South and encompasses 28 appellations and 27 grape varieties. This expanse gives rise to a wide range of soils and climates, depending on the location of the slopes.
What Are the Main White Grapes of Côtes du Rhône?
The main white varieties must make up at least 80% of the blends: Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Marsanne, Roussanne, Bourboulenc, and Viognier.
Producers may complement their blends with two secondary grapes : Piquepoul Blanc and Ugni Blanc, in a maximum proportion of 20%. This diversity enables winemakers to craft white wines with truly unique aromatic profiles.
Northern Rhône: Exceptional White Wines
The Northern Rhône is home to prestigious appellations for white wines: Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, and Saint-Péray stand out for their excellence. Viognier dominates this region, alongside blends with Roussanne and Marsanne. The Northern Rhône produces soft, rich white wines with floral aromas and smooth textures.
Viognier, a key grape in this area, is highly aromatic and fruity, often offering notes of apricot. It produces supple and generous white wines.
The dry whites of the North are also appreciated for their exceptional aging potential, some cuvées reach their peak after 10 years in the cellar.
Southern Rhône: Diversity and Generosity in the Vineyards
The Mediterranean climate of the Southern Rhône shapes white wines with unique character. In these sun-drenched lands, grapes like Roussanne, Clairette, and Bourboulenc are commonly used.
The region’s soils, composed of stones and pebbles, provide excellent drainage and contribute to the singular expression of these dry whites.
Southern appellations like the renowned Châteauneuf-du-Pape offer high-quality, generous white wines. The mistral, a powerful wind typical of the region, helps protect the vines from heat and disease while preserving the freshness and aromas of the grapes.
Major AOCs of the Rhône Valley
The AOC Condrieu is known for producing exclusively Viognier-based white wines. These cuvées reveal intense fruit aromas and a silky mouthfeel.
Saint-Péray, one of the oldest AOCs in France, produces wines with outstanding minerality thanks to its granite soils. The limestone also adds a fresh mineral touch to the wines.
The white wines of Hermitage stand out for their aromatic intensity and impressive aging potential. The Marsanne–Roussanne blend creates complex wines with notes of flowers, fruit, and honey.
In the south, Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc delights with citrus and white flower aromas, while Lirac offers fresh cuvées with hints of dried fruit and pear.
